Bar and Bat Mitzvah Tutoring with B’nai Mitzvah Academy

Are you looking for a virtual tutor that will get your children Bar/Bat Mitzvah ready? By the end of our program, your child will recognize Hebrew letters and vowels, read Hebrew, chant the required B’nai Mitzvah blessings, and confidently recite a Torah and Haftarah portion by the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date.

I can’t guarantee that your child will love studying Hebrew, but I do promise that they won’t hate learning with me. I have been a B’nai Mitzvah tutor for 10 years, so I know exactly how to balance education and entertainment. We will spend plenty of time learning; but, if the session starts to drag, we might take a short break and talk TikTok, YouTube, Twitch streaming, etc.

My approach is simple…ensure that my students enjoy the B’nai Mitzvah process enough so that if and when they attend college and hear about a Jewish event happening at Hillel, they think back fondly on their Bar or Bat Mitzvah and sign up.

I also make sure that my students don’t simply memorize the prayers and portion, but that they actually know how to read it. Hebrew is a language that transcends locale; if we pass down Hebrew from generation to generation, we can continue to keep the words of the Torah and the blessings of Judaism alive.

Who would benefit from online Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring with B’nai Mitzvah Academy?

  • Students who are currently enrolled in religious school or a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program and need additional instruction.
  • Students who are currently enrolled in religious school or a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program and wish to accelerate their learning.
  • Students who live in areas with limited synagogue resources and want a capable tutor.
  • Adults who are having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
  • Adults who attend synagogue services weekly and would like to properly recite the words of the siddur.

Lessons are 50 minutes to one hour and are conducted via Zoom. Any necessary materials will be emailed to the student prior to the session and are also shared on the Zoom screen during our meeting. Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation is actually quite conducive to online learning.

All of my curriculum is available online here on the B’nai Mitzvah Academy website. To get a feel for my teaching style, please peruse the Online Hebrew Lessons available on the website. With these 10 lessons in tandem with our Hebrew workbook, BMA students will be reading complete prayers in a matter of weeks.

If the student is a beginner, please sign up approximately 10 months in advance of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date.

FAQ's

The session will be 50 minutes to one hour weekly. Ideally, the student will make time to practice about 20 minutes each week, but I acknowledge that with busy schedules that simply may not be possible. All I ask is that the student do his or her best to review what we learned in our tutoring session that week.

We ask that you cancel at least 24 hours in advance or you will be charged the full amount of the lesson.

We offer private 1:1 tutoring sessions for $75 an hour.

We can certainly take time off during the summer for camp or vacation. Email jennifer@bnaimitzvahacademy.com with the dates and we will plan a schedule around your summer plans.

B’nai Mitzvah Academy is best suited to work with students in the Reform or Reconstructionist movements or with a non-denominational synagogue.

Absolutely! We will start with learning the Hebrew letters and in 10 months, your child will be fully prepared for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service. We also naturally integrate some Judaic education into our Hebrew training too.

B’nai Mitzvah Academy is a supplement not substitute for synagogue membership. Consequently, we do not work with rabbis or other members of the clergy to lead Bar or Bat Mitzvah services. To learn more about the work we do, please read our Mission statement.

Yes, it is. If two students have Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates around the same time and are at a similar Hebrew level, we can schedule sessions together. Please email at jennifer@bnaimitzvahacademy.com if this is something that you are interested in.
